BREAKING: Rare “Ring of Fire” Annular Solar Eclipse Approaches – February 17, 2026
Astronomy lovers, mark your calendars! On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, a stunning annular solar eclipse – popularly called the “Ring of Fire” – will take place.
During an annular eclipse, the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but appears slightly smaller than usual (because it is farther from Earth in its orbit), creating a dramatic bright ring of sunlight surrounding the Moon’s dark silhouette.
Key Facts About the February 17, 2026 Annular Solar Eclipse:
- Eclipse Type: Annular (magnitude ≈ 0.963)
- Maximum Duration of Annularity: Approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds
- Time of Greatest Eclipse: Around 12:13 UTC (5:43 PM IST)
- Path of Annularity: Primarily across remote parts of Antarctica, crossing coastal regions near the Ronne Ice Shelf, with small extensions into the southern Indian Ocean and southern Atlantic Ocean.
This eclipse will be visible as a perfect “Ring of Fire” only along this very narrow path in Antarctica — one of the most inaccessible solar eclipse paths in recent years. Only a few scientific research stations (such as Concordia or Mirny) may have the opportunity to witness the full annular phase.
For the rest of the world, including India, the eclipse will not be visible at all, as it occurs during local nighttime or below the horizon.
Partial Eclipse Visibility (crescent Sun): Limited to portions of the Southern Hemisphere, including:
- Southernmost tips of Argentina and Chile
- Large areas of southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Madagascar)
- Parts of the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans
Important Safety Reminder Never look directly at the Sun – even during an annular eclipse – without certified solar eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2 standard) or proper indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors.
While this February 2026 event will be out of reach for most people, it serves as an exciting warm-up for an even more spectacular year ahead, including a total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, visible across parts of Greenland, Iceland, and northern Europe.
