SpaceX Aims to Mass-Produce Starships Like Airplanes: $250 Million Gigabay

SpaceX is pushing the boundaries of rocket manufacturing with its new Gigabay facility at Starbase, Texas. This massive $250 million investment in a 700,000-square-foot megafactory is set to ramp up Starship production dramatically, with an initial goal of up to 1,000 reusable rockets annually. Elon Musk recently hinted at even greater potential, suggesting production could scale to 10,000 Starships per year in the future.

Inside the Starbase Gigabay: A Game-Changer for Space Travel

Construction on the Gigabay began in mid-2025 and is on track for completion by December 2026. This colossal structure will serve as a high-volume assembly and refurbishment hub for the Starship system.

Highlights of the facility:

  • Over 700,000 square feet of workspace (some estimates up to 815,000 sq ft)
  • Approximately 380 feet tall, with massive interior volume for vertical integration
  • 24-30 dedicated work cells for simultaneous Starship and Super Heavy booster processing
  • Cranes rated for up to 400 tons
  • More than 11 times the workspace of existing Megabay buildings at Starbase

Elon Musk has described it as a birthplace for “so many spaceships,” emphasizing the shift from prototyping to industrial-scale production.

From 1,000 to Potentially 10,000 Starships Annually

The Gigabay is initially designed to enable production of up to 1,000 Starships per year by the end of the decade. This alone would revolutionize spaceflight, allowing megatons of payload to orbit and supporting rapid reusability.

In a recent update on January 4, 2026, Musk responded to excitement about the facility by stating production could reach “massive volume,” potentially as high as 10,000 ships per year. This ambitious long-term vision aligns with making Starships as commonplace as commercial aircraft.

The Bigger Picture: Why Mass Production of Starship Matters

Starship, the world’s most powerful rocket, is key to SpaceX’s future:

  • Enabling NASA’s Artemis Moon landings
  • Deploying massive Starlink constellations
  • Facilitating point-to-point travel on Earth
  • Building a self-sustaining Mars city

Achieving thousands of Starships annually would make interplanetary transport affordable and routine, turning science fiction into reality.

Latest Progress at Starbase

As of early 2026, construction is advancing quickly with multiple tower cranes on site. Gigabay is rising level by level, adjacent to the existing Starfactory. A similar facility is also planned for Florida to further boost capacity.

SpaceX is transforming Starbase from a development and test site into a full-fledged production powerhouse.
