Swarm of Bees Delays IndiGo Surat-Jaipur Flight at Surat Airport: Bizarre Incident Grounds Aircraft

July 8, 2025 | Surat, Gujarat – In a shocking and unprecedented event, an IndiGo flight from Surat to Jaipur was delayed by nearly an hour after a massive swarm of bees took over the aircraft’s luggage door, causing chaos at Surat International Airport. The bizarre incident, which occurred on Monday evening, left passengers and airport staff stunned as thousands of bees grounded the plane just moments before takeoff.

Un-bee-lievable Disruption at Surat Airport

The IndiGo flight, 6E-784, was scheduled to depart from Surat at 4:20 PM with all passengers already boarded and luggage loading in progress. However, ground staff noticed a large swarm of honeybees clustering on the aircraft’s open cargo door, halting operations for safety reasons. The unexpected invasion created a frenzy as airport personnel scrambled to address the situation.

According to Surat Airport Director A.N. Sharma, this was the first such incident at the airport. “When the aircraft was stationed, the ground staff noticed a gathering of bees on the edge of the cargo door,” Sharma told The Indian Express. “Our firefighting vehicle arrived and removed the bees by spraying water, delaying the flight by nearly 45 minutes.”

Efforts to Disperse the Bees

Initial attempts to disperse the bees using smoke, a common method, proved ineffective. The persistent swarm refused to budge, prompting authorities to call in the fire brigade. Firefighters used high-pressure water jets to clear the bees from the luggage compartment, a tactic that finally worked. The dramatic scene was captured on video by passengers, with clips going viral on social media platforms like X, where users expressed amazement at the unusual disruption.

The flight, an Airbus A320, eventually took off at 5:26 PM, landing in Jaipur at 6:31 PM after a delay of approximately one hour. No injuries were reported, and all passengers remained safe throughout the ordeal. An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed to Financial Express, “Flight 6E-784 Surat-Jaipur was delayed due to a minor bee incident. The flight departed post-clearance, and standard protocols were followed.”

A Rare Occurrence at Surat Airport

Airport officials noted that this was the first time a bee swarm had disrupted operations at Surat International Airport, though similar incidents have occurred elsewhere. For instance, in 2019 and 2020, Air India flights at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport faced delays due to bee swarms, and in 2023, a Delta Airlines flight in the U.S. was grounded for the same reason.

Authorities have since set up an internal committee to investigate the source of the bees, suspecting they may have originated from the eastern side of the airport. “We have checked all our CCTV footage, but nothing conclusive has been found. We are working on preventive measures,” said Surat Airport Director S.C. Bhalse.

Social Media Buzz and Passenger Reactions

The incident sparked a flurry of reactions on X, with passengers and onlookers sharing videos and photos of the bee-covered luggage door. One user, @manojpehul, posted a clip showing the fire engine spraying water to disperse the swarm, captioning it as a “bizarre” event. Another post by @RT_India_news humorously dubbed it “Bees-iness Class,” highlighting the unusual nature of the delay.

Passengers, confined inside the aircraft during the hour-long delay, expressed a mix of frustration and amusement. Many took to social media to share their experiences, turning the incident into a viral moment. The event underscored the unpredictable challenges of air travel, with one X user noting, “In travel, sometimes the best stories come from the least anticipated events.”

What This Means for Air Travel

While rare, such wildlife-related disruptions highlight the importance of preparedness at airports, especially during monsoon season when bees are known to exhibit such behavior. Surat Airport, a growing hub, is now reviewing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The event also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of air travel, where even a swarm of bees can ground a flight.

For travelers planning to fly from Surat or other regional airports, this incident emphasizes the need to expect the unexpected. Stay updated with Click USA News for the latest travel news and tips to navigate such surprises.
