Tragic Nigeria Car Crash: Anthony Joshua Injured, Two Close Friends

By ClickUSA News Staff December 30, 2025

In a devastating incident that has left the boxing world in mourning, British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on December 29, 2025. The crash, which took place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State, resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s closest friends and longtime team members, while the former two-time world heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries.

What Happened

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. local time when the black Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and four other adult males reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. According to preliminary findings from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), excessive speed and an improper overtaking maneuver are believed to have contributed to the collision with a stationary truck parked along the roadside.

Lives Lost and Survivors

Tragically, two passengers did not survive the crash:

  • Sina Ghami — Joshua’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, who had been part of his team for over a decade and played a key role in preparations for some of his biggest fights.
  • Latif “Latz” Ayodele (also known as Kevin Latif Ayodele) — Joshua’s personal trainer and a trusted confidant.

Both men were described by promoter Eddie Hearn as “integral members” of Joshua’s team and “close friends.” Hearn issued a heartfelt statement: “With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz.”

Anthony Joshua escaped with minor injuries, primarily bruises. He remained conscious at the scene and was transported to an undisclosed hospital in Lagos for observation. Authorities from Ogun and Lagos states confirmed that he is in stable condition and did not require emergency medical intervention.

Reactions from Around the World

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally reached out to Joshua and his mother to express condolences and wish the boxer a full recovery.

The global boxing community has been deeply shaken by the news:

  • Jake Paul, whom Joshua defeated via sixth-round knockout on December 19, 2025, in Miami, said: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted.”
  • Chris Eubank Jr. added: “Thank god our heavyweight champ survived… pray for the two fallen soldiers Latz & Sina & their families. I knew both… they were genuinely good men.”

The crash came just 10 days after Joshua’s impressive return to the ring against Paul, following a 15-month hiatus.

Investigation Continues

Officials are still investigating the precise cause of the accident, with some early reports suggesting a possible burst tire may have contributed to the loss of control. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most hazardous routes.

This is a profoundly tragic moment for everyone connected to Anthony Joshua, the families of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, and the entire boxing community. Our thoughts remain with those grieving and with Joshua as he recovers.
